Addresses the Many Facets of a High-Profile Case
MIAMI (March 11, 2010) – Attorney Christopher G. Lyons, founding and managing partner of Miami-based law firm Lyons & Lurvey, P.A., spoke on the many facets of a high-profile case at the University of Miami School of Law Entertainment and Sports Law Society’s 14th Annual Symposium Saturday, March 5, at the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus.
Lyons, a former prosecutor, is an experienced litigator in state and federal courts and has significant experience handling sports law issues including criminal, civil, administrative and disciplinary matters. Well-known for his representation of NFL player Donte Stallworth (Baltimore Ravens) in a DUI manslaughter case and wrongful death lawsuit which received nationwide attention, Lyons has become a trusted resource for professional and collegiate athletes seeking legal representation. This past year, he has represented numerous sports figures including former NFL player and television personality Warren Sapp, collegiate football player Marvin Austin (University of North Carolina) regarding an NCAA amateurism violation, NFL players Anthony McDaniel (Miami Dolphins), Antonio Brown (Pittsburgh Steelers), Marcus Stroud (Buffalo Bills), and Willis McGahee (Baltimore Ravens), NBA player Dorell Wright (Golden State Warriors), and ATP World Tour Tennis player Wayne Odesnik for an anti-doping violation appearing before the International Tennis Federation in London.
Lyons spoke alongside distinguished attorneys David Cornwell, Stephen Starks, Donald Jackson, and Alan Fertel to examine the issues that arise when a high-profile individual encounters a legal issue, including civil and criminal suit implications, actions taken by the professional team or organization in which that individual is involved, as well as media relations.
The annual symposium is a day-long event where law students and professionals take part in a forum to discuss current legal issues in sports, entertainment, intellectual property, the arts, and the media. Local and national attorneys, faculty, agents, legal advisers, athletes, and entertainers are invited to serve as panelists, lead Q-and-A sessions, and foster academic debate. NFL agent and former NFL player Ralph Cindrich delivered the keynote address. Jamal Mashburn, former NBA player; Derek Johnson, Florida Marlins Vice President and General Counsel; and Stephen Starks, U.S. Anti-Doping Agency Legal Affairs Director; also spoke at the symposium, among others.
